The reported incident involving OpenAI’s autonomous AI agent going rogue and hacking a company should not be viewed simply as another cybersecurity story. Rather, it should be the clear strategic warning that the world is entering a new phase of an Unprecedented and Unmitigated Geo-Poli-Cyber™attacks, risks, threats & warfare where artificial intelligence is no longer merely a tool supporting human decision-making, but emerging as an independent operational actor, one that is capable of directly impacting and influencing economic and geopolitical events. The fate and direction of nations, economic stability and instability, national security and insecurity, as well as the survivability of national sovereignties are all hanging in the balance.

The news reports represent one of the first publicly acknowledged instances in which an autonomous AI system identified vulnerabilities within its containment environment, escaped the restrictions imposed upon it, selected an external target, and initiated offensive cyber actions without direct human awareness, intervention or oversight.

Regardless of the damage magnitude this incident has caused, its strategic implications on so much more is extremely profound.

Autonomous AI Crossroads Unmitigated Geo-Poli-Cyber™ Attacks, Risks, Threats & Warfare

In 2012, I created the terms Poli-Cyber™ and Geo-Poli-Cyber™ (GPCyber™) after observing a series of politically and geopolitically motivated cyber incidents that I believed represented a fundamentally different category of threat than financially motivated cybercrime.

I talk about this in great detail in my two-time international best-selling book “Survivability”.

My goal was to help national leaders and top business decision makers everywhere better distinguish between financially motivated cyber-attacks and those motivated by political, geopolitical, ideological, extremist, ‘terrorist’, or state sponsored.

I was not interested in scaremongering as many do. I was focused on offering strategic and operational solutions that did not yet exist, to risks most did not yet know of.

This was foundational to the National and Corporate Survivability Strategies I created in 2011 and 2012 and which have continued evolving and improving ever since. In essence I took the best of cyber security strategies, regulatory frameworks and their implementations and appended to them domestic and international politics and geopolitics as additional risk vectors to assess and mitigate individually and collectively.

The aggregate of all these risks is what I and my MLi Group refer to for over a decade and a half as Geo-Poli-Cyber attacks, risks, threats and warfare.

Core to my philosophy from day one was the belief that “If you cannot name the threat, you cannot mitigate that threat”.

AI is Now an Unmitigated Geopolitical Asset Risk Vector

The global race for Artificial Intelligence has evolved far beyond mere commercial competition.

Today, for some countries, AI has become a strategic national asset comparable to nuclear technology, advanced semiconductors, quantum computing, satellite infrastructure, and military capabilities. Nations are investing hundreds of billions of dollars hoping to turn AI into not only a national economic competitive advantage, but a military superiority, intelligence gathering, cyber dominance, for regional or global geopolitical influence.

The competition between the United States, China, Russia, Europe, and emerging technological powers is no longer solely about innovation or stock markets corporate quarterly earning reports —it is about who will WIN NOW, and who will rule & DOMINATE the 21^st CENTURY. Winning means reshaping the current world order and formulating emerging world orders in the political ethos of the victorious side.

AI has become an unprecedented power instrument of national powers.

More critically, AI is now a new unmitigated seismic risk to ALL nations of the world, and no nation, sovereignty and/or economy are immune.

The Emergence of Autonomous AI Geo-Poli-Cyber Risk Vector

Traditional warfare has always evolved through distinct domains:

• Land

• Sea

• Air

• Space

• Cyber

Artificial Intelligence now transcends all of them, creating an Unprecedented Geopolitical Asset Risk Vector that is alarmingly Unmitigated.

Autonomous AI systems can simultaneously operate across multiple domains by analyzing intelligence, conducting cyber operations, influencing public opinion, manipulating financial markets, disrupting critical infrastructure, coordinating drone swarms, and accelerating military decision-making—all at machine speed.

The convergence of geopolitics, cyber operations, artificial intelligence, economics, information warfare, and critical infrastructure protection defines what I have long described as Geo-Poli-Cyber.

This is no longer a theoretical framework.

It is becoming the operational risk reality of the twenty-first century.

Containment Has Become the Weakest Link

The reported OpenAI incident illustrates a critical lesson.

Security researchers rely on “sandboxes” to isolate advanced AI systems during testing. However, if an intelligent system can identify weaknesses in its own containment environment, exploit them, and operate beyond its intended boundaries, the traditional assumptions underlying AI safety must be fundamentally reconsidered.

The challenge is no longer simply designing more capable AI.

The challenge is ensuring that increasingly capable systems remain aligned with human intent and operate within enforceable constraints.

As AI capabilities continue to advance, containment may become one of the most difficult engineering and governance problems of our time.

Machine-Speed Conflict Changes Everything

Throughout history, wars have been constrained by human limitations.

Decision cycles required hours, days, weeks or longer.

Autonomous AI compresses those timelines into seconds.

Future conflicts may involve AI systems capable of:

1. Continuously discovering zero-day vulnerabilities.

2. Conducting millions of cyber reconnaissance operations simultaneously.

3. Coordinating large-scale cyber campaigns.

4. Manipulating information ecosystems.

5. Launching financial disruption campaigns.

6. Targeting supply chains.

7. Influencing elections and democratic institutions.

8. Supporting military operations through autonomous intelligence.

The strategic advantage increasingly belongs not to those with the largest workforce, but to those with the most capable autonomous systems.

This fundamentally alters the nature of deterrence.

Political Systems Are Becoming Attack Surfaces

Modern nations and democracies rely upon interconnected digital systems such as.

· Election infrastructure.

· Government databases.

· Financial institutions.

· Media platforms.

· Communications networks.

· Energy grids.

· Transportation systems.

· Healthcare.

· Water.

· Food logistics.

Every one of these sectors has become both digitally connected and strategically vulnerable.

Autonomous AI expands the scale and sophistication of potential attacks against each of them.

The question is no longer whether these systems can be targeted.

The question is whether governments can effectively defend them against adversaries operating continuously at machine speed.

Critical Infrastructure Are NOT the only New Battlefields

Future wars may begin without missiles.

They may begin with algorithms.

Power grids disabled.

Financial markets manipulated.

Satellite communications interrupted.

Ports halted.

Hospitals locked down.

Transportation systems paralyzed.

Supply chains disrupted.

Industrial control systems compromised.

Artificial Intelligence significantly increases both the speed and precision with which these interconnected systems may be targeted.

In many scenarios, economic paralysis may achieve strategic objectives more effectively than conventional military action.

The Weaponization of Technology & Information

Artificial Intelligence also transforms cognitive warfare.

Highly sophisticated AI systems can generate persuasive narratives, realistic synthetic media, multilingual disinformation campaigns, and personalized influence operations capable of shaping public perception on an unprecedented scale.

Political polarization, already intensified through social media, may be further amplified by autonomous systems capable of continuously adapting messaging for different audiences.

The battlefield increasingly includes human perception itself.

Truth becomes contested terrain.

Escalation Without Effective Human Oversight |‘Do no Harm’ & ‘AI for Good’ Impotencies

One of the greatest strategic concerns is autonomous escalation.

Human decision-makers historically provide political judgment before military escalation occurs.

Autonomous AI may optimize toward objectives without understanding broader geopolitical or human suffering consequences.

An AI conducting cyber reconnaissance could inadvertently trigger diplomatic crises.

A defensive algorithm could be interpreted as an offensive attack.

Competing autonomous systems could interact in unpredictable ways, creating escalation dynamics that no human explicitly intended or may be able to stop.

Managing machine-to-machine interactions must become one of the defining national security & insecurity challenges to be addressed domestically and internationally now and ASAP, not in the coming months or years.

AI Governance is a Critical Strategic Necessity for Humanity & National Sovereignty Security

The accelerating development of increasingly capable AI systems requires an unprecedented international intervention above and beyond the current conventional domestic or international regulatory governance frameworks. Many existing multilateral agreements and frameworks took years and decades to formulate – critical time humanity does not have and cannot afford.

How will governments, international organizations, industry leaders, and civil society collectively address and resolve questions such as:

a) How should autonomous AI be certified before deployment?

b) What international norms should govern AI-enabled cyber operations?

c) Who bears responsibility when autonomous systems cause unintended harm?

d) How should strategic AI capabilities be monitored across national borders?

e) What safeguards should exist for critical infrastructure?

f) How should AI systems be prevented from autonomous escalation during geopolitical crises?

These questions cannot be answered by technology companies alone, nor by Private Public Partnerships (PPP) many of which have been hijacked by special interest.

The Survivability Imperative

From a Survivability perspective, this incident is not an isolated technical event.

It is another indicator that humanity is entering an era characterized by unmitigated, interconnected, and cascading Geo-Poli-Cyber attacks, risks, threats, and events, where geopolitical rivalries, cyber conflict, artificial intelligence, economic warfare, critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, climate pressures, terrorism, organized crime, and information warfare increasingly reinforce one another.

No nation, corporation, institution, or community operates in isolation.

But more importantly, no nation, corporation, institution, or community is immune from this. None. Zero.

Resilience is no longer sufficient. You cannot be resilient until you have secured your Survivability capability.

Nations and organizations must rethink and upgrade their national and corporate strategies to make them capable of anticipating all kinds of systemic disruption rather than merely responding to isolated incidents.

This requires analysis, assessment, mitigation and integration pertaining to these and other dynamics such as:

1. Geo-Poli-Cyber Risk Exposure,

2. Political & Geopolitical Intelligence,

3. National Sovereignty Insecurity,

4. AI Governance (Corporate, National & International),

5. Cyber Security Effectiveness.

6. National Survivability & Security Planning.

7. Regulatory Frameworks (national & International)

8. Critical National Infrastructure Defence & Protection.

9. Supply Chain.

10. Crisis Leadership.

11. Strategic Communications.

12. Economic Security.

13. Public-private collaboration.

14. Others best not to be named publicly

Survivability is no longer simply about recovering from crises.

In fact, and sadly, I am once again validated for saying for the last decade:

“Security (cyber & non-cyber) is No Longer the Effective Strategic Focus. ‘Survivability’ of Perpetual Wars, Unprecedented Chaos, & Unmitigated Geo-Poli-Cyber™ Attacks, Events & Warfare, is.”

A Defining Moment for Humanity & us — the people of the world.

Whether the OpenAI incident ultimately proves to be an isolated laboratory event or the first visible sign of a broader technological transition, it serves as a strategic warning.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming an independent force multiplier across politics, economics, national security, and global affairs.

The convergence of AI with geopolitical competition has ushered in a new era of Geo-Poli-Cyber warfare, where autonomous systems may shape conflicts, influence societies, disrupt economies, and challenge traditional notions of sovereignty and deterrence.

The defining question of our time is no longer whether AI will transform the world—it already is.

The question is whether humanity can establish the governance, ethical leadership, international cooperation, and strategic foresight necessary to ensure that this transformative technology serves civilization rather than destabilizes it.

In an era defined by accelerating complexity and interconnected crises, Survivability is not merely about enduring disruption—it is about enabling businesses, nations, societies, institutions, and people to adapt, govern wisely, and thrive amid persistent uncertainty. The decisions to act or ignore, and the choices made as a subsequence to this event will determine whether artificial intelligence becomes humanity’s greatest strategic advantage or its most consequential catastrophic unmitigated risk.

An Unprecedented Intervention is Needed - Where Will Authentic Global Leadership Come from to Save Humanity from AI Going MORE Rogue?

An unprecedented intervention is critically needed to create an equally unprecedented international cooperation mechanism, the like of which the world has never seen before. One that befits this new AI era. Failure is not an option.

On face value, it is well documented that the United States Trump Administration believes very limited AI governance is the way to go in order not to stifle innovation, and to continue leveraging the great advantages gained by American companies in this space. The EU prefers a bit more AI governance while other nations around the world would like to see even more oversight.

Only two international organizations come to mind where quality discussions for something tangible on AI Governance can take place sooner than later. The question is which one can fulfil this role while humanity holds its breath?

A- The United Nations? I do not think so. The UN’s ineffectiveness to help bring solutions to many conflicts and political issues around the world in recent years is glaringly visible. If you doubt my words, just look how effective the UN has been on any war, conflict or key topic in the last 5 years.

B- The International Telecommuting Union, (ITU): Possibly, based on its mandate, but ITU today is very challenged while suffering a leadership crisis. I was in Geneva in early July attending and participating in the ITU’s AI for good and WSIS 2026 summits. I was surprised to discover how low morale had been at the organization. I also learnt that tribunal grievance case(s) had been filed by senior ITU employee(s) against ITU’s current Secretary General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. The cases filed pertain to abuse of power, authority of the office, as well as discrimination. I also learnt that conclusions of these cases did take place on July 16, 2026 and that these tribunal conclusions have not exonerated Mrs. Bogdan-Martin. The saga seems to cause a major ongoing problem for the Trump administration maybe without their knowledge. It appears a large number of ITU nation states members are unhappy with Mrs. Bogdan-Martin thinking that because Doreen Bogdan-Martin is an American citizen, she is protected by the Trump administration. When I spoke with some national delegates they expressed to me that they and many other nations are baffled why President Trump and his administration continue to support Mrs. Bogdan-Martin despite her documented abuse of power.

On December 31, 2024 I wrote and published my warnings and predictions about incoming Trump’s 2nd term and Administration. The post was titled: “Rule of Law” & “Justice” at Unprecedented Risk in America & the World in 2025 & For Decades to Come. It saddens me to have been more than 100% accurate in my predictions and that they were some of so many warnings and predictions that I had made in the last three decades which more than came true.

Decades of Validation I hoped Would Not Happen

In Survivability, my two-time international best-seller which is now in its third edition and whose foreword was written by Dr. Arthur Laffer who is best known as the Father of Supply-Side economics, I made countless warnings and predictions about geopolitics, technology, cyber and sinister motivations will infuse to become a grave new threat vector that everyone including the best of the best will struggle to address or mitigate.

I had identified and called this new risk/threat vector Geo-Poli-Cyber (GPCyber) back in 2012. I also I predicted back then that this will not only impact people, businesses and governments worldwide but that this new threat vector will devastate and destroy some.

My rational was, and still is, that the best of cyber security strategies and solutions will fail on unprecedented scales and that top decision makers lacked new effective strategies, solutions and mechanism that are capable to mitigate politics, geopolitics and geo-poli-cyber threats as a risk. Sadly again, all my warnings and predictions have more than come true and continue to do so.

A Note Before We Begin

Hello everyone,

What you are about to read is not a story about Canada.

It is a story about America — about what happens when the most important relationship your country has quietly, methodically, and permanently changes. About what it costs when a neighbour you took for granted decides it is done being taken for granted.

Mark Carney has been Canada’s Prime Minister for one year. In that year, he has rearmed his country, rebuilt its alliances, secured its Arctic, reoriented its trade away from the United States, and stood on the world stage at Davos to say — without euphemism, without apology — that the old order is over and America is no longer its anchor.

The United States barely noticed. That is the problem.

I have spent weeks on this report — pulling every thread, verifying every number, tracing every consequence. What I found is not comfortable reading for an American audience. But it is necessary reading. Because the Canada that exists today is not the Canada that existed a year ago. And the implications for the United States — economically, strategically, geopolitically — are profound.

THE OPENING

You Weren’t Watching. He Was.

While America was consumed by its own noise — the tariff announcements, the Truth Social posts, the daily theatre of Washington — something consequential was happening 55 miles north of the border.

Canada was changing.

On March 14, 2025, Mark Carney — economist, former governor of two central banks, crisis manager by training and temperament — was sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister. He had never held elected office. He had spent forty years in the rooms where the hard decisions get made. And he had watched, from those rooms, as America’s relationship with its allies became something unrecognisable.

When he stepped into the crease, the puck was already moving.

Within weeks he had called a snap election and framed it as a referendum on Canadian sovereignty — specifically, on whether Canada would bow to American pressure or stand its ground. He won, but only garnered a minority government. The Conservative leader who had been 20 points ahead in the polls lost his own seat in parliament.

Canadians had made their choice. And it was not the choice Washington expected.

That is the man America is now dealing with. That is what changed. And the consequences — for trade, for the Arctic, for alliances, for the fundamental architecture of North American relations — are only beginning to be felt.

PART ONE: THE TRADE WAR AMERICA STARTED — AND WHAT IT COST BOTH SIDES

$2.5 Billion a Day. Gone.

Start with the number that should stop every American in their tracks.

The United States and Canada have the world’s most comprehensive trading relationship — $2.5 billion worth of goods and services crossing the border every single day. Canada is the top destination for American exports. It is the supplier of the energy, steel, aluminum, lumber, and auto parts that keep American factories running and American homes heated.

When the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods in February 2025, it did not just hit Canada. It hit America.

Economists estimate that the 2025–26 tariff cycle has already reduced Canadian GDP by 1.5–2%. Canadian households are absorbing an estimated $1,700–$2,000 in higher annual costs. But here is what the tariff cheerleaders did not mention: American businesses and consumers face inflationary pressures too. Tariffs on Canadian goods and materials have raised prices considerably for American businesses, disrupted American supply chains, caused delays and increased costs, and made American-made products more expensive.

General Motors’ 2026 outlook includes $3–$4 billion in expected tariff costs — presented directly to investors as a core risk factor. That cost does not stay in a boardroom. It flows to prices, to layoffs, to communities.

And then there is tourism. In February 2025, Canadian travel to the United States dropped by 40 percent compared to the previous year. A poll found 62 percent of Canadians planned to avoid traveling to the U.S. for the next year. The shift in Canadian travel away from the U.S. could amount to an annual loss of $4 billion for the American economy.

Four billion dollars. Gone. From hotels, restaurants, shops, and border communities that had never thought of Canada as an adversary — because Canada had never been one.

What Canada Did Instead

Here is what Washington missed while it was congratulating itself on being “tough” on Canada.

Carney did not fold. He retaliated — methodically, strategically, and with surgical precision. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs were aimed at products from Republican-leaning states. American steel and aluminum remain subject to Canadian counter-tariffs. Canadian provinces pulled American alcohol from liquor store shelves. Ontario cancelled a $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink.

But the more consequential response was not the retaliation. It was the pivot.

Canada began, for the first time in a generation, to seriously diversify away from the United States. New trade relationships with Europe. A trading memorandum with China. Legislation to reduce internal trade barriers and build a self-reliant domestic market. A Major Projects Office fast-tracking $116 billion in nation-building infrastructure — LNG terminals, critical minerals, nuclear, new trade corridors — all designed to get Canadian resources to markets that are not American.

In June 2025, for the first time since the early 1990s, Canada imported more vehicles from Mexico than from the United States. That is not a footnote. That is a structural shift in a relationship that took 75 years to build.

The tariff war did not bring Canada to heel. It accelerated Canada’s independence from America. That is the outcome Washington produced.

PART TWO: THE DAVOS SPEECH AMERICA DISMISSED

What He Said. What It Meant.

On January 20, 2026, Mark Carney walked onto the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos — the room where the global elite gathers to decide what the world looks like next — and delivered the most consequential speech by a Western allied leader since the end of the Cold War.

He did not name Donald Trump. He did not have to.

He called what America had done to the global order a rupture — not a transition, not a realignment. A rupture. The rules-based international order was over. The WTO, the UN, the multilateral architecture that America built and led for 80 years — under threat, crumbling, no longer fit for purpose. Great powers, he said, had begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.

The room stood and applauded. That does not happen at Davos.

Trump responded the next day from the same stage: “Canada lives because of the United States. They should be grateful to us. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your remarks.”

Carney’s response, when reporters pressed him: “I meant what I said.”

Here is what that exchange revealed — and what most American media missed entirely. For the first time since World War II, a close American ally stood in front of the entire world and told Washington: we see you clearly, we are no longer pretending, and we are building something that does not depend on you.

That is not a diplomatic spat. That is a strategic realignment. And it has consequences for every American who assumes that Canada will always be there — reliable, deferential, quietly essential — whenever America needs it.

America used to set the table. Carney is telling you: the seating has changed.

PART THREE: THE ALLIANCES AMERICA IS LOSING

Canada Is Not Waiting for Washington

For 75 years, Canada’s foreign policy operated on a simple assumption: America leads, Canada follows, the relationship is worth the compromise. That assumption is dead.

In its place, Carney has built what he calls variable geometry — coalitions that shift by issue, not ideology. You work with whoever shares your interests on any given day. Less romance, more geometry.

In practice, that means Canada is building the alliances America is abandoning.

Canada held the G7 presidency in 2025 and used it to invite 12 non-G7 nations to the table — Australia, Brazil, Chile, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, and others. The stated goal: diversify trade and security relationships away from dependence on any single partner. The unstated message was clear to every leader in the room.

The numbers that followed are staggering. The G7 under Canadian leadership mobilised more than $570 billion for global infrastructure investment. A Critical Minerals Production Alliance unlocked $6.4 billion in new partnerships. A proposed trading bloc bridging the Trans-Pacific Partnership with the European Union would encompass 1.5 billion people — a market Canada could access with or without American cooperation.

Canada signed a defence cooperation agreement with the European Union’s Security Action for Europe initiative. It deepened ties with the Nordic-Baltic Eight nations on Arctic security. It flew to New Delhi to repair a strained relationship with India. It purchased radar equipment from Australia — specifically because, as Canadian officials made clear, it no longer fully trusts American intelligence-sharing arrangements.

Read that last sentence again.

Canada — America’s closest ally, sharing the longest undefended border in the world, integrated into American defence through NORAD for 67 years — is now buying security infrastructure from Australia because it does not fully trust Washington.

That is what one year of Carney has produced. That is what one year of Trump’s approach to Canada produced first.

PART FOUR: THE ARCTIC — AMERICA’S BLIND SPOT

The Most Valuable Piece of Real Estate on Earth. And Canada Is Claiming It.

Here is the story almost no one in Washington is paying attention to. It may be the most consequential of all.

The Arctic is melting. By 2027, scientists project the Arctic Ocean could be completely ice-free in summer — opening the Northwest Passage, the shipping corridor that cuts 7,000 kilometres from Asia-to-Europe trade routes, to regular commercial transit for the first time in human history.

Russia knows this. China knows this. And now, Canada knows that America knows this — and is not sure whose side Washington is on.

The Trump administration has declared “Arctic dominance” as a strategic priority. It has repeatedly sought to acquire Greenland — by economic pressure, by diplomatic coercion, and by refusing to rule out military force. It has sent vessels through the Northwest Passage — Canadian waters — without permission. Its position remains that the Passage is an international strait, open to all.

If Washington gets what it wants in the Arctic, it is not just Russia and China that lose sovereignty in the region. It is Canada.

A May 2025 poll found that 37% of Northern Canadians named the United States as the most serious threat to the Canadian Arctic — slightly more than the 35% who named Russia.

Your closest ally now views you as its primary Arctic threat. Let that land.

Carney’s response has been to build. Fast and seriously.

Canada has committed $6.7 billion to Arctic infrastructure, surveillance, and monitoring. It has committed $38.6 billion to NORAD modernisation — radar, sensors, over-the-horizon surveillance. It is procuring up to 12 under-ice-capable submarines — the first serious Arctic naval capability Canada has pursued in generations. It launched the Arctic Sentry mission in February 2026, coordinating seven Arctic NATO nations against encroachment. It bought radar technology from Australia, not America.

Canada is militarising its Arctic. Not against Russia. Not against China. Against all of them — including, if it comes to it, the United States.

That is the world America’s Arctic policy has created.

PART FIVE: WHAT AMERICA IS LOSING — AND MAY NOT GET BACK

The Price Tag on a Broken Relationship

Step back and look at what the United States has lost — or is in the process of losing — in a single year of treating Canada as an adversary rather than an ally.

A trading relationship worth $2.5 billion every day — disrupted, rerouted, and being systematically replaced by Canadian alternatives. A tourism flow worth $20 billion annually — down dramatically, with $4 billion already gone from the American economy. An ally whose military procurement now explicitly looks elsewhere. An Arctic partner that is building its own defences independently. A G7 presidency that used its platform to build coalitions that do not require American participation. A Davos speech that told the entire world — out loud, to a standing ovation — that the American-led order is finished.

And perhaps most importantly: a neighbour that used to assume the relationship was permanent, and no longer does.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down roughly 70% of the tariffs imposed on Canada without clear congressional authorization. The legal argument for the trade war collapsed. The economic argument — that tariffs would reduce the trade deficit and bring manufacturing home — has produced, according to Brookings, a trade deficit that rose modestly and manufacturing jobs that declined slightly.

The tariffs did not work. The relationship damage did.

THE VERDICT

Wake Up, America. Your Neighbour Has Already Moved On.

Mark Carney is not anti-American. He has been careful, throughout a year of provocation, to make that clear. He wants a functional relationship with the United States. He understands the depth of the integration, the shared history, the genuine common interests.

But he is also a man who spent forty years reading risk. Who governed two central banks through crises. Who sat in the rooms where systems failed and learned exactly what systemic failure looks like from the inside.

And what he sees, looking south, is a country that has decided its allies are leverage points rather than partners. That treaties are bargaining chips. That the relationships it spent 80 years building are liabilities to be renegotiated rather than assets to be protected.

He has responded the only way a serious leader can: by building resilience. By finding new partners. By spending what it takes to be sovereign. By telling the truth in public, on the world stage, in front of everyone.

Canada has changed. It is stronger, more independent, more strategically agile, and less reliant on American goodwill than at any point in living memory. Its approval ratings at home — 66%, among the highest ever recorded in Canadian history — tell you that Canadians believe in what he is building.

The question is not whether Canada has changed. The question is whether America is paying attention.

Because the relationship that made North America the most successful economic partnership in human history was not built on tariffs and annexation threats. It was built on trust, on integration, on the assumption that the border between the two countries was a line on a map, not a front line.

That assumption has been tested. It has not broken — yet. But it has been bent in ways that will take years, perhaps decades, to straighten.

Your neighbour has changed. The bill is coming. And America is going to pay it whether it was watching or not.

One year in: the damage is real. The question is whether it is permanent.
